Happy Halloween from LA!

But the highlight was ‘mummy scraps and ghoul barf’ (fettucine alfredo). Delish!

Several of the staff also came in costume, both here and at other branches. Some of the highlights included a nun, a pair of cowgirls, plus a very special cross-gender reunion of “Destiny’s Child” (circa “Survivor”). Whether you’re going out with friends this evening or spending time with family, we hope you have a fun & safe Halloween!

Mid October marked the arrival of a new group of employees at Outsource corporate headquarters for Foundation Training. And as is custom, we kicked off the 10 day training with a happy hour mixer with the corporate staff (see pictures). Foundation Training is a immersion program that brings new hires up to speed on all things Outsource; what we do, how we do it, and how to succeed here. We want our new employees to get the skills they need to get right into their roles and feeling comfortable with their duties and goals. The introductory period is a great opportunity for everyone to learn, ask any questions that come to mind, and work the kinks out before we put them in place with their teams.

This class featured five new members of the Outsource family: Casey Merriman from the New York office, Jessie Adams from San Francisco, Matthew Guevara and Mariela Alvarez from our Washington, D.C. branch, and Nick Ellis from Phoenix. The training was helmed by our Talent Acquisition Manager Amanda Delzell, in conjunction with our Director of Staffing Jenny Zhao. In addition to developing fundamental skills, shadowing other employees and working on role playing exercises, the trainees also got to spend time with CEO John Lowell, and East Coast Regional Manager Carl Lechner, who was also at corporate for a series of meetings.

We welcome this new class to Outsource, and we know you’re prepared for success!

The Veterans: Amanda Delzell (Talent Acquisition Manager) with Victoria Esna (Northeast Territory Manager) and Tracey Burchfield (Recruiter, Atlanta).

The House of Blues on the Sunset strip is a fantastic venue for live music, and our very own John Lowell (CEO) performed there recently with his band, Redondo Bitch. John plays the drums and the band is a trio specializing in heavy B-side classic rock. Think AC/DC, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, and of course the Stones. This was Redondo Bitch’s second appearance at the House of Blues in the last few months, having also played in the venue’s Foundation Room in July. There was a large contingent of the Outsource family in attendance for the show. You can check out Redondo Bitch’s Facebook page here… become a fan and come on out to their next gig!

Several of the L.A. staff came out to the show.

It was dark, but you can sort of see John (center) on the drums here.

Savannah joined the Outsource family in the San Francisco office in 2008. She rose to become a key member of the San Francisco office staff, and then was given an opportunity to relocate to Southern California and join the corporate team. She moved to Los Angeles in early 2013 and had quickly become a valued resource for the entire company in her new role as Human Resources Director.

Congratulations Savannah on a job well done, and here’s to the coming years ahead!

The Outsource booth was busy and we met a lot of great people at the show.

The 2013 BICSI Fall Conference and Expo was a huge success for Outsource. Held in Las Vegas Sept 15-19, the conference had over 3,800 attendees from the cabling installation and wired systems industry. The Fall and Winter BICSI conferences are a great opportunity for us to meet with new customers, and to catch up with our established clients too. We never miss a BICSI show and were Bronze level sponsors of the Fall conference.

This year we sent a team of nine Business Development Managers along with Shawn Dale, our Director of National Accounts, and Steve Ebenhack, our VP of Sales. Outsource hosted several happy hour get togethers during the week, and we thank everyone that stopped by the booth to say hello or who came out to our after hours events.

We’ll of course be back at the Winter 2014 BICSI show, Feb 2-6 in Orlando, FL. If you want to get free tickets for the Winter Expo, please contact Steve Ebenhack at steve@outsource.net

AudioVisual Work

Whether you are looking to change career tracks, or are starting at the very beginning of your professional life, the audiovisual field is a path worth considering. While a decade ago many who embarked into AV work learned on the job, now there are many educational programs in audiovisual skills. Vocational and technical schools, along with some art schools and universities are now offering certificate and degree programs to train the next wave of AV professionals. Even with a good education and training, many audiovisual workers starting out begin in apprenticeships and internships. Usually lower-paid positions, the idea is that young AV professionals must learn to work and problem-solve on their feet, and therefore in these ‘stepping-stone’ positions are being partially compensated for their work by the continued education and exposure they get on the job. In most circumstances these beginning positions are wonderful start-outs and a great foundation for a lucrative AV career to come.

What makes the audiovisual field a smart career choice? The most dominant factor is the great expansion this field has witnessed in the last fifteen years. Audiovisual work went from being a small niche in the educational and entertainment realm to being broadly applied to hospitality, event planning, art, fashion and even the corporate sector. From the highest levels of corporate conferencing to rural elementary school classrooms, audiovisual technology can be found functioning on a daily basis. This means that innovation is demanded of the AV field constantly. As more sectors wish to apply this technology, more technicians and engineers must trouble-shoot new applications and uses. As the work becomes more creatively and technically sophisticated, so to does the compensation. Pay, even at the lower and beginning levels is on the high end of reasonable for audiovisual professionals. And, unlike many industries, the economic recession was kind to technological fields like audiovisual.

One of the other benefits of choosing the audiovisual line of work is the prevalence of quality audiovisual staffing agencies. Agencies who do audiovisual staffing, as well as other sorts of technical job staffing, are a huge help to AV workers, both in landing those first jobs, and also in continuing to maintain steady employment. To climb the career ladder, audiovisual professionals often must work a variety of different jobs, for different sorts of employers. Sometimes this is project-to-project, short term work, though longer more permanent jobs are also available. Either way, career growth usually makes it essential for AV professionals to stay informed about the opportunities present in the job market. Audiovisual staffing agencies serve as a key connection to companies that regularly need audiovisual staff, and a recruiter at a staffing organization can be one of the most important relationships a young AV professional can have. Above and beyond all of the good logistical reasons to investigate a career in the audiovisual field, is that these jobs can be creatively satisfying. With more freedom than many desk jobs and a greater artistic aspect than many other technical fields, AV work starts, and stays, exciting.
