Humble Beginnings

Outsource was founded in 1998 by our CEO, John Lowell, who started the company out of his apartment in Hermosa Beach, CA. He grew the business from home for two years before opening the first office in El Segundo, CA, where the company has been headquartered ever since.

20 U.S. locations

Three of the people to first join John in the Outsource adventure are still with the company today: Vice President of Sales Shawn Dale, Director of Low Voltage Chris Hubbard, and Outsource President Steve Ebenhack.  By establishing an organization with a culture dedicated to developing talent and promoting from within, they serve as prime examples of how Outsource is a company dedicated to providing opportunities to its employees and rewarding results. This is how Outsource has established itself as the foremost provider of skilled labor for the low voltage and electrical industries with 20 locations across the country.

Expanding Specialization

As Outsource expands into new markets, it continues to stay focused on specialized verticals while exploring ancillary staffing niches.  Staying committed to making its own talent Outsource has opened training centers in all locations for individuals looking to start a career in the low voltage and electrical industries. According to John, this remains a key component to the company’s future growth. “Our vision is to tackle the nationwide labor shortage head-on by making our own field talent in our training centers.”

Outsource specializes in quick and reliable on-demand labor and highly skilled technicians. We support a wide range of blue-collar industries including: low-voltage, electrical, fire alarm, security and controls. With 20 U.S locations across the country, we can staff any project in the nation.

Outsource Features Local Artist Bob Dob

Since the 1970s, American punk rock music and culture has flourished in Southern California.

Since the 1970s, American punk rock music and culture has flourished in Southern California. By the end of the decade, bands like X, the Germs, Black Flag, the Zeros, the Weirdos, the Screamers and Bags, were at the forefront of the region’s punk scene. It is a scene that grew thanks to independent record labels, magazine, fanzines, local DJs, and the clubs that hosted these raucous live shows.

The spirit of community and collaboration that cultivated the movement inspired hundreds (if not thousands) of bands through the following decades and continues to gain recognition, with The New York Times publishing an article in November 2018 titled “The New Punks of Los Angeles” that explores how Latino teenagers are shaping the city’s new music scene. The 1990s were an especially important era in Los Angeles and the surrounding communities as bands like NOFX, Rancid, Blink-182, Bad Religion, Green Day, The Offspring, Pennywise, and Sublime dominated the charts and airwaves.

The artist and illustrator Bob Dob, whose paintings are featured in Outsource’s corporate headquarters, grew up in Hermosa Beach in the 1980s and 90s. It is a town rich with surf and skate culture as well as the birthplace of west coast hardcore punk. Dob played in the punk band Lunacy during the 1990s and the influence of L.A.’s music scene is clearly evident in his paintings today. Although Hermosa Beach provides the backdrop to much of Bob Dob’s work, the characters and pop culture icons that populate this world and the experiences he conveys through their narratives make his work universally relatable.

There is a deep current of dark humor in Bob Dob’s work, which he says is inspired as much as performing in a punk band is it is by the video games of his youth, Disney, Mad Magazine, Garbage Pail Kids, and being diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 12 years old. While the characters in his paintings exhibit distinctly adolescent qualities, one gets the sense that they have encountered more than they should in their short lives. Bob Dob’s work is inspired by a period in his life and in the history of Hermosa Beach that he lovingly shares, despite the challenges life invariably presents to us all.

In 2001, Bob graduated from Otis College of Art and Design with a BFA in Illustration. Bob has shown his work throughout the United States and Europe, including solo exhibitions at renowned galleries like La Luz De Jesus, Gallery1988, and a November 2018 solo show at Hermosa Beach’s ShockBoxx called “You Should Have Been Here Yesterday”. His list of illustration clients include The Fox Family Channel, Aflac, Kraft, Intel, The Village Voice, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Random House Publishing, and numerous editorial magazines.

Many of the subjects in your paintings seem to exhibit a sense of calm/detachment/intense focus amid the chaos around them. Has this always been evident in your work or is something that evolved?

Bob Dob: It’s always been part of my work I think. I played in a punk/thrash band for 12 years and when you on stage creating the chaos of the mosh pit you feel the intensity but you are also calmly observing. It’s really a distance feeling.

You’ve stated in previous interviews and in your artist statement that your work is heavily influenced by events that occurred as you were growing up. Are there things in your adult life that presently influence your work?

BD: Now that I have kids there’s a sense of nostalgia that I want to incorporate into my themes. My kids won’t get to experience the rawness Hermosa Beach use to be. I tried to capture it in “The Golden Punk God Made of Clay”. Pennywise and the entire music scene in the early 90’s in the South Bay was an amazing time. Going to a punk show at Chillers, Frogs, Looneys Tavern, and the many other clubs around town was the place to gather on a Friday or Saturday. Sometimes 400 to 500 people would show up. I realize now how special it was and want to continue creating imagery that depicts my experience of that special time.

Your work has a definite sense of place. Have you thought about what it would look like had you had similar experiences growing up in New York City or even a small town in middle America?

BD: I have and I’m sure I would gravitate to the same music and scenes that inspired the work inspired by growing up in Hermosa Beach.

Have you thought about having a show outside of Southern California? If so, where would you like it to be (can be city, country, specific gallery, etc.)?

BD: I have shown in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Denver, Miami, and Boston in the states. Overseas I’ve had group shows in Italy. England, and Australia. The show in Italy was a blast as I went over with the whole family. The curator of the show took us to dinner one night and this older Italian woman, wearing a very conservative, long blue dress showed up. The curator introduced me to her and it turns out that she bought my painting titled “Smoking, Drinking, Raging!” which shows one of my characters giving the middle finger. It was so strange but very cool. Next I’d love to have a showing in New Zealand or maybe Germany.

You’ve been able to find success in the gallery world while simultaneously expanding into merch like vinyl figures and collaborations with clothing companies. Do you find yourself getting pulled further one way or the other? Or is it easy to balance the two?

BD: I’d love to do nothing more than sit and paint in my studio all day but I like to mix it up and seeing my characters in a 3D medium or a tee shirt with my character on it is great.

What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?

BD: You gotta love doing it and putting in the work. You need patience and knowing it’s probably going to take time.

What advice would you give to an artist experiencing a creative block?

BD: Go to a museum or experience something you may have forgotten. I just went and saw Rancid and Pennywise play and it was very inspiring.

Finally, what’s on the horizon for Bob Dob?

BD: I have four vinyl collectables coming out this year at DesignerCon (www.designercon.com) I also have a tee shirt brand I’m working on. And, of course, some new paintings and drawings.

1The 2015 BICSI Winter Conference & Exhibition proved to be an even bigger success than last year for Outsource, who not only exhibited at the show, but was also one of the exhibition’s leading Sponsors. The company also hosted a Happy Hour reception on the last night of the event that was well attended.

BICSI is a professional association that supports the structured cabling installation industry, its technicians, and vendors. Exhibits covered the range of voice, data electronic safety and security, as well as A/V technologies. Held this year at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort & Convention Center from February 22- 26, 2015, it is one of the key shows in the information technology systems and structured cabling industry.

According to Business Develop Manager Matt Lechner, who works out of the Atlanta office, things got started quickly for the Outsource team: “We pulled a tall order from one of the national customers on the second day and we’re diving into it head first.” He added, “After attending more than 20 BICSI events, Outsource continues to see fresh faces and new companies in the different markets.”

With technical pre-conference seminars, countless breakaway sessions to attend, on-site examinations for those looking to get their BICSI credentials, and every attending company’s booth to visit in the exhibition hall, these were a packed five days for BICSI Conference participants. Outsource is the only national provider of staff and technicians for the a number of industries represented at the event, including Building Integration, Security, Electrical, Audio/Visual, Data Center, and Cabling, and we maintain a strong presence at both the West Coast and East Coast shows.

Unknown-1

Inside Sales Representative Jeremy Murdy, also from the Atlanta office, has been with Outsource for just under a year. He got a front row seat to the energy and huge scale of BICSI: “I think that this was something that was very useful for new Inside Sales Reps. It’s a great learning tool to just get out there and sell. It takes you out of your comfort zone and puts you in a situation where you need to be personable and sell.”

The company generated 238 official leads this year. About half of them were from the Southeast, although businesses from the Northeast and Central United States showed strong numbers. There were even 19 leads generated from West Coast companies. Craig Wrenn, who serves as a Business Development Manager, came down from the Jacksonville office and it was his second BICSI event as a member of the Outsource team. He said, “It’s a great show. I got to see a lot of my clients and we generated a lot of leads. In terms of total numbers, it was definitely bigger and better than last year.”

photo 1[9]

The number of attendees increased from 4,200 last year to 5,000 in 2015, as did the number of exhibitors, growing from 180 to 200. The BICSI Conferences are an excellent opportunity for participating Outsource team members to meet, exchange ideas, and interact with thousands of prospective clients one-on-one, and to check in with current clients. Traveling to trade shows is a great opportunity to learn from veteran employees, and we always send a balanced group so that the senior staff can mentor while junior members get hands on experience.

Outsource would like to thank all of those who joined us in Orlando and we look forward to the upcoming 2015 BICSI Fall Conference & Exhibition, this September 20-24 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas!

recruiter-training-outsource2014 proved to be a banner growth year for Outsource and the company set a Q1 emphasis to hire new personnel and promote recruiters into sales roles. As a result of this tremendous growth, Outsource is proud to announce that this February, the company hosted its largest Foundation Training class ever. Eleven employees, all recent Outsource hires, participated in the weeklong course at corporate headquarters in Los Angeles. The training class was run by Recruitment Operations Manager Danny Brawer and consisted of recruiters from offices in Phoenix, Austin, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Tampa, and New York City.

The sessions ran began February 11th and consisted of role-playing challenges as well as classroom instruction, with an overall goal of helping trainees understand who Outsource is as an organization and how they fit into the big picture as a recruiter. They’re taught how to identify people to recruit, how to get an interview, as well as how to go out into the field and recruit new hires for the company. When asked about the class, Brawer said, “The trainees gelled well together and there was great energy. They all have bright futures ahead of them at Outsource.”

Outsource training session aren’t all about work, of course. We like to play hard, too. During the evenings, trainees would get together and explore the Los Angeles nightlife. On Thursday night, the company treated everyone for dinner at Rock’n Fish Restaurant in Manhattan Beach; there were daily lunches, as well as a Tuesday happy hour at one of the company’s favorite after-work spots.

Congratulations to all of our new Recruiters and welcome to Outsource!

sales-trainingFebruary got off to a fast start at Outsource, which hosted one of its largest sales training sessions to date. Six employees, all recently promoted into Account Manager and Outside Sales positions, participated in the weeklong course of orientation and training at corporate headquarters in Los Angeles. “A big part of Outsource’s success can be attributed to the fact that our team members consistently provide an exceptional level of service to our clients, and that starts right here at the Sales training,” Vice President of Sales Sam Jarvis said. “We focus on making sure every person on our new Sales team walks out of here with a deep understanding of our clients’ business needs and how Outsource is uniquely able to address them.”

The sessions provide participants the additional training they need and provides role-playing challenges so they are equipped to handle anything the trainees might encounter once they return to their branch offices. Regional Director of Operations Jenny Zhao, who also helped lead the course, said, “It was a very positive class and one of the larger sales training sessions we’ve had.”

The courses are a great opportunity to learn and practice the company’s methods, gain the skills needed for success, and to receive mentoring from our senior employees. But the week wasn’t just about work. Monday night, everyone got together for happy hour, followed by a group dinner on Wednesday. It was great to see so many members of the Outsource family taking a break to socialize and have a good time together.

Congratulations to all and best of luck in your continued success and growth with Outsource!

photo 5At Outsource, we consider each of our employees to be members of a competitive team and we want to reward out top performers. In addition to the generous perks program we offer at Outsource, we also host an annual rewards trip to Cancun, Mexico for employees who have achieved outstanding results for the company. The entire sales team looks forward to the trip, which everyone agrees is the highpoint of the year.

“I have been on the Cancun trip for the past two years and hope to go again this year. To me, this trip serves as a great motivator and it gives everyone something exciting to strive for. It also allows all of the offices around the country a chance to bond and get to know each other in a more relaxed environment.”   – Tracey Burchfield, Senior Recruiter

“The trip helps build a sense of team. Surrounding yourself with the top performers of the entire company enables you to learn about other people, their techniques, best practices, and the chance to share stories that may even help you in your home market. Although it is definitely a “carefree” rewards trip, this is an Outsource event, which means that everyone attending genuinely loves talking about work and what we do each day. No, seriously, we do.”  – Jessica Ruiz, Territory Manager

If you are an employee at Outsource, you were hired in part for your competitive spirit and your desire to succeed. The Cancun trip serves as an excellent opportunity to meet Outsource team members from all over the country, which strengthens the connection between our different offices.

“The trip is such a great time to develop relationships with co-workers. Not only does it allow you to interact on a more personal level with the people you physically work with each day, but it also allows you to mix with team members from across the country who clearly share the same drive and values.”   – Holly Andrews, Account Manager

At the same time, we do our best to foster a sense of family in this competitive, business environment. You’ll quickly see how accessible people are at Outsource, how excited everyone is to discuss the direction of the company, and how to succeed on another level.

“The trip definitely helps us out professionally. There are no barriers in building relations or restrictions as far as with whom you are able to talk. Whether it’s a Recruiter, Account Manager, or a member of the Executive Team, you are encouraged to interact with everybody and to review how business has been and where it is going.”   – Cameron Crivello, Regional Fulfillment Manager

“It definitely builds a sense of team and allows us to get to know our co-workers in a relaxed setting. The people who go on the trip are the ones that are fully dedicated to the company. It’s great getting to know other leaders that we frequently hear about and see doing well on the sales report.”   – Jorden Noack, Account Manager

We recognize not only how hard the people of Outsource work, but also the contributions made by their significant others. Husbands, wives, family, boyfriends, and girlfriends play a big part in supporting our employees’ efforts, which is why Outsource encourages our attendees to bring a guest to accompany them on the trip.

“The best part of the trip is being in a relaxed capacity with the people that work so hard to drive this organization. Everyone is relaxed and you get to mingle not only with Outsource employees, but their significant others, whose support serves as a driving force behind the success of this company. I know my husband sincerely appreciates being able to take part in such a fantastic reward. Every year when we make it home, he can’t stop talking about how awesome it was to meet the people that keep me so happy at work.”   – Holly Andrews, Account Manager

We cover all expenses, including travel, VIP treatment, and hotel luxuries like a spa and wellness center, tennis courts, beach butlers, fine dining options, and fantastic pools. The trip also includes unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks at the property’s lounges and swim-up bars. Those who have travelled with us to Cancun find that it’s a great way to relax, recharge, and celebrate personal accomplishments.

“We all work very hard, competing with other individuals in the company to put up strong numbers. We do it for personal growth and for the opportunity to sit poolside, enjoying endless food and drinks. The trip is relaxed, comfortable, fun, and it gets you excited about doing even better the following year. It’s a treat to be surrounded by so many others Outsource team members from all over the country who share the same passion and drive as you. It just a great feeling to know that you belong with this company for the long run.” – Jessica Ruiz, Territory Manager

The Cancun trip is more that just a chance to relax and celebrate a successful year. It’s an excellent opportunity to network and strengthen the connections between our 19 offices. When our people get to know each other on a personal level, share what they’ve learned throughout the year, and hear about the success others are having, they feel more connected to the company. We believe that when employees feel connected to their company, the company transforms into the best possible company it can be. This is what we strive for every day at Outsource: to be the best.

images-1In August 2014, Outsource initiated the Fitbit Corporate Wellness Program as a way to power and inspire team members to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle and to create a culture of well-being, improve participant health status, and increase team productivity. Participants are able set their own goals and monitor their progress on Fitbit’s digital dashboard where you can record workouts and analyze your trends with easy-to-read charts and graphs. With Fitbit, you can estimate calories and log food with a barcode scanner, which makes it easy to keep track of how much you’re eating. (Yes, we’re looking at you, Holidays.)

Controller Ellen Sue Chang became the first Outsource team member to reach the 1,000,000-step milestone. She set a personal goal of 10,000 steps/day and was able to accomplish her million-step feat in only three months. When asked how she was able to do it, she said, “I made it a point to do more outdoor activities. Living in Pasadena made it easier because it has a very walkable downtown area. It also helps that I have two very large dogs, who keep me active!”

One of her favorite aspects of the Fitbit Corporate Wellness Program is the ability to invite friends and family to share stats, send cheers (and taunts!), and track the competition on the leaderboard. She and other Outsource team members would compete in side challenges they called “Workweek Hustles.” Ellen Sue says, “It’s fun to bring people together, compete with one another, tease each other about who’s winning, and establish bragging rights for the week.”

Participating employees buy the Fitbit and Outsource immediately reimburses them for 50% of the cost. Once they hit the one million-step milestone, Outsource will reimburse them the remaining 50% of the Fitbit.

Based in San Francisco, Fitbit designs products and experiences that track everyday health and fitness, empowering and inspiring people to lead healthier lives. As the leader in the fast-growing Connected Health & Fitness category, Fitbit’s diverse line of award-winning products includes the Fitbit Flex wristband, Fitbit Zip, and Fitbit One activity trackers, as well as the Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale. Corp-Thanksgiving
Outsource kicked off a new tradition by inviting offices across the United States to participate in a potluck lunch in celebration of Thanksgiving. To commemorate the event, we asked that each team submit photographs of their lunch and to let us know how it went. Offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Denver, Houston, San Francisco, New York City, Phoenix, Seattle, and Austin all pulled together and it sounds like everyone had a blast (including a technician candidate in San Francisco who timed his interview just right).

Here are a few highlights (some are hilarious). It speaks volumes about a company whose team members take the time to come together all across the country, celebrate at work, and offer up their experiences for everyone to share.

Houston-ThanksgivingHouston

In Houston we had a wonderful time. Everyone really put an effort in and we had what felt like a real Thanksgiving lunch. It was traditional food such as stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potations, green bean casserole, a variety of pies, cornbread and rolls, and macaroni and cheese. Every person put thought into what we were bringing and made it a great time. We even listened to Christmas music, joked around and spoke about what we were thankful for.

San Francisco ThanksgivingSan Francisco

Our potluck was delicious! Everyone pitched in and brought some great food. We have turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, creamed corn, cranberry and cornbread. For dessert we had pies and ice cream. We all hung out in our conference room and enjoyed having lunch as a team.

We even had a technician here for an interview that joined in briefly. He was pretty impressed with the process as a whole and got a kick out of the fact that we offered him lunch. It was awesome spending time with everyone and enjoying good food and good company.

Dallas ThanksgivingDallas

We had our potluck last Friday with great results. Almost everyone pitched in, resulting in too much food and some tryptophan induced sleepiness in the afternoon (but we fought through, and our productivity was not diminished!). Some highlights were homemade corn pudding by Caroline Robinson and too many delicious desserts to begin to count. In true Texas spirit, we even had chips & salsa.

We’re thankful for having a great company, a great office, a great team, and maybe most importantly a great deal of coffee in our cupboards.

New York ThanksgivingNew York

Here is the tale of a New York Thanksgiving:
We laughed, we cried (joyfully), and came together as a work family. Brett ruined a great pair of gloves carrying the food, but actually one might say he enhanced them with the smell of turkey.

We completed our meal and Joe bravely carried the extra tray of turkey home feeding one very lucky homeless man with it…and himself, too.

Denver ThanksgivingDenver

With smiles on their faces, and bundles of joyful Thanksgiving side dishes held tenderly in their arms, you could tell that the day was going to be special right from the beginning. The smell of a delicious Thanksgiving meal permeated the office as the day moved along and eager mouths began to salivate. Dishes were heated up and as we set the tablecloth and plastic dishware on the table, I felt like I really was with family, but not just any family: my Outsource family.

Outsource held two employee training classes the last week of October. There was one group of new hires that were going through the week long Foundation Training, and one group of veteran employees that have recently been promoted into account management roles.

Outsource holds Foundation Training courses routinely, and new employees from across the country are flown to Los Angeles for a week of orientation and training in our corporate headquarters. It’s a great opportunity to learn and practice our methods, gain the skills needed for success, and to get some mentoring from the senior employees.

And speaking of senior employees, there was also a group of them in town at the same time, getting briefed on the account manager role that they’ve recently moved into. The week long session gives everyone the additional expertise they need, and provides role-playing challenges so they’re each well equipped to handle anything they encounter back at their branch offices.

Congratulations to all and here’s to your continued success and growth with Outsource!
