AudioVisual describes work of many types and jobs with many different qualifications. AV is a term for any technologies that involve image, film, and sound, and particularly the coordination of those components. At conference centers and event locations audiovisual technicians are employed to install and update, maintain and repair the AV equipment that promotes communication, entertainment and presentation. This places audiovisual workers in a variety of umbrella fields including: hospitality, event planning, corporate communications, film, television, radio and education.

Audio Visual Jobs

A good deal of audiovisual jobs are temporary. Based on contracts, and usually part time, these sorts of AV jobs are designed per project or per event; a one time deal. This means that audiovisual contractors may be flooded with work and income at some times, and underemployed at others. Agencies that do audiovisual staffing are a great help to solving the problem of inconsistent hire. Audiovisual staffing agencies build a base network of technical and creative AV workers. The agency is then hired by companies to find workers for specific projects and positions, both short or long term. Obviously, the more adaptable and qualified the audiovisual technician, the more suitable job openings there will be. Jobs in education, especially at colleges and universities are often more maintainable. These institutions are in continual need of audiovisual technology and professionals to manage them. Even in poor economic times, educational organizations tend to stay afloat and solvent. It is a tough call, and every situation is different, however it is important to consider the progression of your audiovisual career.

As the economic landscape of the United States shifts to recover from the recession, there is a growing trend away from white collar trades. While ten years ago, a college degree in law, business or medicine seemed both the preferred and often necessary route to professional and financial success, these fields are becoming increasingly more difficult to find employment in. Furthermore, the years spent in lower levels of these occupations as apprentices and junior associates is increasing, while the pay bracket is getting smaller and smaller on both ends. The only thing becoming greater in fact, is the desolution of firms and loss of pre-existing jobs. This is inherently because such careers depend heavily on the amount of capital moving through the economy. In simplistic terms, if there is less money flowing, less people are needed to manage it.

Because of this decline, more young people are considering training in trade skills to start work in technical careers. Going through a certification course, or a one or two year technical school program can prepare you to be a licensed electrician, carpenter, or plumber. Jobs like this often include union membership, insuring reasonable hours and reasonable pay. Even when the economy is less that wonderful, new construction will always need the skills of such tradesman, as will older buildings that need maintenance.

This shift in focus is actually very good, both for the construction industry and the economy at large. Flooding the field with fresh, new blood cultivates growth within form of these jobs, expanding the work traditionally done. It also allows for more workers to become proficient and experienced at a younger age, allowing efficiency and skill to grow with time. Younger workers will also tend to be more willing to learn about new technologies and keep themselves up to date with the needs of the consumer. This availability may aid in the growth of the industry, creating more work and more jobs in the future.

Economically speaking, the shorter training time of technical trades – about two years in comparison to the four, eight and even ten year education programs of universities, means that more individuals of a younger age will move out of the dependence of family and education loans sooner. They will experience job placement faster and begin earning money with more alacrity, resulting in the possibility of surplus capital to spend. The lack of student – loan based debt frees up money to be infused into the market. People then have reasonable wealth sooner, not only to spend on luxury items, but sustainable capital that can grow, like real estate, land property and stocks. To add to the economic incentives, many workers with careers in construction and trade report a great deal of satisfaction with their jobs, meaning that they enjoy the completion of tasks, and find the work-load to be manageable. Ironically, this might mean that, as a country, we need more Lawyers and Business men again, though it will be a combination of trade work and small business that we have to thank for our recovery.

The telecom cabling job market is growing. When many industries are shrinking with the economy, in many parts of the country telecom cabling technicians are in high demand, and are even seeing wages and salaries increase. This work, however, is not easy. The technical training and skill required is ample and the knowledge of standards and practices is pretty impressive as well. For all of the mental and technical difficulty, an often overlooked factor of these jobs is the physical difficulty. When working on large projects, a telecom cabling tech might be running hundreds of feet of cable through various awkward spaces to hundreds of end terminations. This type of cabling will require lots of bending over, kneeling, crawling and even sometimes heavy lifting. These motion put a great deal of stress on the back, knees and hips. Even for young and considerable healthy technicians, this sort of joint and muscle pressure can quickly take it’s toll, however you need not fear if you are minding your physical form as you do you work. Here are some ergonomic, yoga-teacher-approved tips to help keep your body happy and healthy while performing cabling tasks:

1. When bending down to below wast level, keep your feet a little than hips-distance apart and keep your knees unlocked.

2. Don’t bend at you waist! It places too much pressure on your spine to do so repetitively.

3. Try to make motions from up to down and down to up continuous, full body motions.

4. If your back starts to tense when you are bent over, softly bend your knees and roll from the bottom of your spine to the top with a loose neck. This will realign you spinal column and unknot your muscles.

5. When available, use your hands or hips to lean against solid object, taking the weight off your lower joints.

6. If pain arises in the knee joints while kneeling for long periods try sitting cross-legged or indian style to remove pressure on the nerves.

7. When standing for long periods, try to brace yourself against something, and allow yourself to move or sway occasionally to improve circulation to you legs.

8. (It sounds silly, but-) Breath while you move. It relax your muscles and allows your body to work at it’s best.

9. Wear good shoes. Make sure your footwear is appropriately protective. Sometimes it is worth a few extra bucks for the arch support in your boots. If your back always hurts, get better shoes.

10. You might also think about taking up Yoga. No, seriously.

This might seem like a lot to keep in mind for a little bit of back pain, but remember that these are action you will take thousands if not millions of times over the course of a career in telecom cabling.

The more consideration you take doing these tasks, the longer your body will physically be capable of doing them. Also, the more you body will be available to you for tasks outside of work, which is really what we reserve ourselves for, right?

Outsource looks to start 2013 strong, announcing the opening of its latest office in Atlanta, GA. Outsource is one of the leading companies in network cabling staffing, and this newest branch is being headed up by Matt Lechner and Cliff Fiering, who both relocated to Atlanta to spearhead the new effort.

This will be the 17th office location for Outsource, and more are on the horizon. Los Angeles houses Outsource’s headquarters, but there are offices spread all across the country — in Arizona, Boston, Chicago, Texas, Washington, and more. The newest additions in Oklahoma City and Atlanta are already making business connections and finding placements for companies in their areas. Lechner and Fiering are top associates who will make the Atlanta office another valuable Outsource location. Lechner has been with Outsource for several years and has no intention of leaving. He said he “looks forward to growing with the company” and that he’s “with Outsource for the long haul.” Fiering has a degree from Virginia Tech in Market Management and has worked as a recruiter for the past few years. He joined Outsource a little over a year ago and has proved to be exceptionally talented at finding security and fire technicians.

You visit offices and houses and businesses and meet a wide variety of people every day. I’m sure everyone has their own special horror stories, but there are a few things, whether with customers or their own company, that most cabling technicians seem to agree to hate.

1. People who can’t make decisions. Nothing is more frustrating than talking over options with a customer, drawing up a plan, and sometimes even starting an install when they decide to change their minds and go with something cheaper, or with a different cable option. Another aggravator are the people who keep looking at you like you’re speaking martian after they asked for a detailed explanation. Seriously, just tell us what you want to happen, and we’ll give you a few options at different prices to make that happen. I don’t understand the stock market and you don’t need to understand an Ethernet tree.

2. The company making you look bad. Sometimes, it’s actually not your fault. When a company has ten technicians and only six trucks, then it makes it very difficult for technicians to arrive on time and complete work in set hours. When you are the one showing up late, or calling for the fourth time to apologize for your tardiness, it is you that the customer is angry with — you are the face of the company.

3. Terrible weather in conjunction with terrible manners. Working in below freezing weather in gusty winds is never fun, but its much worse when a client asks for an update every thirty minutes and talks to you through the cracked open door of her toasty warm house with a mug of steaming coffee in her hand. Oh, no thanks, I prefer icicles in my nostrils and frozen eyelids over a warm drink. On the opposite spectrum, would it kill them to offer a cold drink when you’ve been slaving away in the blistering heat for hours? It adds a special irritation when they drink margaritas and watch you work from the pool.

4. Unsanitary and unsafe conditions. Whether it be a faulty ladder or a disgusting crawl space, just a warning would have been nice. Oh, you forgot to tell me there was a sewer leak until after I crawled around in it? Awesome. Or how about when you move a piece of furniture to access equipment, and find mold and other indecorous things growing there? Working in a filthy environment is never fun, but it’s worse if it can actively affect your health. And the smell is not helping us work any faster. It’s actually making us want to pass out.

5. The assumption that we are there to fix every piece of technology. I am a cabling technician. I have not been called here, generally at a very inconvenient hour, to assemble your computer, put together your surround sound system, see what we can do about your iPad not turning on, or get rid of a virus on your laptop. In addition, if we have come to your house to give you internet, please have some common sense and have a computer for us to test it on. In the same vein, if you have ordered digital cable, make sure your TV actually functions so we can test it out.
